CONTEMPORARY BRAZILIAN PRINTMAKING

International Print Center New York presents Contemporary Brazilian Printmaking, an exhibition of fine art print projects by over fifteen artists working in Brazil today. It will be on view at 508 West 26th St, 5th Floor, from March 20 - May 23, 2014. 

Artists include: Nara Amélia, Mônica Barki, Ernesto Bonato, Ulysses Bôscolo, Marco Buti, Cleiri Cardoso, Helena Freddi, Sheila Goloborotko, Nina Kreis, Kika Levy, Fabricio Lopez, Alberto Martins, Claudio Mubarac, Laerte Ramos, Augusto Sampaio, Alexandre Sequeira, and Lambe-Lambes by Maura de Andrade, Sergio Kal, Mauricio Parra, Maria Pinto, Yili Rojas, and Carlos Henrique Soares. 

Employing a wide range of mediums, techniques and styles, the artists featured in the exhibition represent many different aspects of contemporary Brazilian printmaking. They have been selected by a group of curators, art historians and print specialists working together to identify important trends and achievements in the field of printmaking in Brazil. For the majority of the artists, this exhibition is the first showing of their work in New York. As such, it offers a long-anticipated opportunity for New York audiences to connect first-hand with Brazilian art today. 

Inheriting this tradition, the artists included in Contemporary Brazilian Printmaking resist convention, embracing technical experimentation and representing (in the words of one curator) an intuitive, if sometimes naïve, approach to the genre. This exuberance as reflected in the work of our featured artists will make for an exciting and revealing exhibition. Their techniques range from aquatint, drypoint, mezzotint, and woodcut to contemporary photo etching, digital printing, and photo engraving.

Contemporary Brazilian Printmaking is the eighth presentation in our International Exhibition Series. Launched in 2003 with Traces and Traditions: Vietnamese Woodblock Prints, the series has included the following exhibitions: ¡Impresionante! Innovative Prints by Contemporary Puerto Rican Artists, Moscow Grafika: Artists’ Prints 1961-2005, New Editions Scotland, Graphic Reality: Mexican Printmaking Today; Seeing God in Prints; Indian Lithographs from the Collection of Mark Baron and Elise Boisante and, most recently, Silent Watch: Contemporary Prints from Finland. 

Curators 

Eduardo Besen is co-founder of São Paulo’s Gravura Brasileira Gallery, which contains a collection of more than 3,000 works of modern and contemporary printmaking. With a history of organizing national and international exhibitions for emerging and renowned artists and publishing art books and print portfolios, Gravura Brasileira Gallery has become a focal point of Brazilian printmaking. A recog¬nized authority on Brazilian printmaking, Besen has lectured widely both in Brazil and abroad on the subject. 

Priscila Sacchettin is a PhD candidate in Art History at the State University of Campinas – Unicamp. She was assistant curator at São Paulo’s prestigious Instituto Moreira Salles, a cultural organization promoting the development of projects in photography, literature, Brazilian music, and the visual arts. She also contributes to the Itaú Cultural Institute Brazilian Art Encyclopedia; an Internet database used by students and advanced scholars for their research projects. With a master’s degree from the University of São Paulo, Sacchettin writes about contemporary artists as a member of the Young Critics Group of Centro Universitário Maria Antonia.

Rodrigo Naves is an art critic, art historian, and professor, has been published in numerous Brazilian magazines and newspapers and was editor of the culture supplement Folhetim (in the newspaper Folha de São Paulo). Naves holds a Ph.D in Aesthetics from the University of São Paulo. 

International Print Center New York is a non- profit institution dedicated to the appreciation and understanding of fine art prints. IPCNY nurtures the growth of new audiences for the visual arts, while serving the print community through exhibitions, publications, educational programs and member services.
