Biography

Alberto Alexandre Martins (Santos, São Paulo, 1958- ). Engraver, sculptor, writer and poet. Holds a master`s degree in Brazilian literature from the Faculty of Philosophy, Literature and Humanities of the University of São Paulo (FFLCH/USP). At the start of the 1980s, he studied engraving with Evandro Carlos Jardim (1935- ) at the Department of Visual Arts of the School of Communications and Arts of the University of São Paulo (ECA/USP). In 1985, he received a Capes/Fulbright scholarship for a refresher course at the Pratt Graphics Center, in New York. Since this time, he has devoted himself to wood engraving, sculpture and poetry and works as an illustrator. He is the author of the books Poemas [Poems] (Ed. Duas Cidades, 1990) and Cais [Quay] (Ed. Editora 34, 2002), illustrated with his engravings. He also devotes himself to literature for children and adolescents and has launched the books Goeldi - História de Horizonte [Goeldi - A Story of the Horizon] (Ed. Paulinas, 1995), for which he received the Jabuti Prize, and A Floresta e o Estrangeiro [The Forest and the Stranger] (Ed. Companhia das Letrinhas, 2000), a poem realised on the basis of gouaches and watercolours by Lasar Segall (1891-1957). In 2000, he completed his doctorate in visual poetics at ECA/USP with the work entitled Cais - a set of drawings, woodcuts, sculptures and poems which present images realised with a formal economy and to which he constantly returned: hulls of ships, boats,

cranes, volumes and crates, present in the port landscape of the city of his birth.
